ANPR Gate Access Control For Logistics Warehouses And Ports

A gate that processes a truck in five minutes and one that processes it in under one minute use the same barrier and the same guard. The difference sits in how the vehicle is identified before it stops. DP World’s NSIGT terminal in India cut average gate processing from roughly five minutes to under one by reading the vehicle automatically on approach (AllRead), and the physics that makes that possible is a pixel count on a plate, measured at the point where the plate is read.

Why Gate Queue Time Is The Number That Moves

A logistics warehouse or a port gate runs a queue whether or not anyone measures it. At busy terminals, manual gate handling adds eight to twenty minutes per truck transaction during peak periods (DockerVision), and published automation programmes report truck turnaround improvements in the range of 30 to 40 percent once identification stops being a manual step (Weboccult).

The private-sector case differs from the smart city case in one respect that changes the whole design. A municipal ANPR camera reads free-flowing traffic at speed across several lanes. A gate camera reads one vehicle, in one lane, that is already decelerating toward a barrier, twenty-four hours a day, in whatever light the yard has at 03:00. That is an easier optical problem and a harder duty cycle.

IDENTIFICATION METHOD

ANPR And Long-Range RFID Solve Different Halves Of The Gate

ARSA has delivered an automated industrial gate for a warehouse operator in East Java using UHF RFID readers and a mobile data entry application, handling sea cargo into warehouse transit. That project is the honest comparison point, so it is worth being direct about where each method wins.

UHF RFID authenticates. A reader and a tag must match, and the read is unaffected by mud on the plate, by rain, or by a bent bracket. Its limitation is enrolment: every vehicle that will ever enter needs a tag issued, fitted and tracked, and tag stock, readers and the administrative process around them carry a running cost. Industry pricing puts UHF fixed readers at roughly $1,500 to $3,000 each (CPCON).

ANPR identifies without enrolment. Any vehicle that arrives with a legible plate is read on its first visit, which suits a gate where a large share of arrivals are third-party hauliers, one-off deliveries or vendor trucks nobody has tagged. ANPR carries no per-vehicle consumable. It also carries a real weakness, and stating it plainly is more useful than selling around it: a plate is a printed label. A damaged, obscured or duplicated plate defeats the read, and ANPR alone is identification rather than authentication.

Many gates end up running both, with RFID for the regular contracted fleet and ANPR for everyone else, both feeding the same access decision (Nedap). Where a single method has to carry the gate, the deciding question is what fraction of your daily arrivals are vehicles you control.

WHAT THE GATE CAMERA MUST DELIVER

Pixel Density On The Plate

Plate recognition needs 325 pixels per metre at the read line, the highest requirement of any vehicle analytic ARSA publishes in ARSA-CVS-001. Pixel density falls as one over distance, so the read line is a fixed band on the ground rather than a general direction the camera faces.

A Shallow Viewing Angle

Optimal tilt for plate recognition is 10 to 25 degrees below horizontal, with 30 degrees the maximum. A camera looking steeply down at an approaching bonnet foreshortens the plate into a few rows of pixels, which is the most common reason a gate camera that looks adequate on a monitor fails in commissioning.

A Manually Fixed Shutter

Automatic exposure lengthens the shutter in low light and smears a moving plate. The minimum shutter is set by hand for the analytic stream, along with constant bit rate and smart codec disabled, because variable bit rate starves the encoder at exactly the moment a truck enters the frame.

The Numbers A Gate Position Has To Meet

Maximum camera-to-plate distance below is for a standard 60 degree lens. A narrower lens roughly doubles each figure while halving the width covered, which is usually the right trade at a single-lane gate where the field of view only needs to span one vehicle.

Plate recognition is the one analytic on the standard that carries a 0 lux figure, because retroreflective plates return infrared strongly and the read does not depend on colour. A hi-vis vest check on the same driver at the same gate needs 50 lux of white light and stops working entirely under infrared, so a gate that wants both functions needs both illumination types. The lens and field of view visualizer will show you the read band for a given mount before anyone climbs a pole.

DEPLOYMENT

What The Appliance Does At The Gate

The AI Box Mini handles up to three camera streams and is built for cabinet mounting, which covers a typical gate lane running an ANPR camera, an overview camera and a driver-side camera. The Server model handles up to 25 streams where several lanes route back to one gatehouse. Appliance hardware is $1,890 for the Mini and $10,900 for the Server. The Traffic Monitor licence is $1,170 per camera perpetual with $211 per year maintenance, or $39 per camera per month. Camera hardware and the ANPR addon are quoted separately.

Events leave the appliance as REST or webhook payloads, which is how the plate read reaches your warehouse management system, your gate controller or your barrier relay. ARSA supplies the identification and the event. Deciding whether the barrier opens belongs to your access control platform, which already holds the booking, the dock assignment and the blacklist.

Three things the system does not do, stated so nobody discovers them during commissioning. It does not read container numbers, ISO codes or seal data, which is a separate optical task at a different geometry. It does not authenticate a driver against a plate. It does not recover a read from a plate that is caked in mud, folded, or absent.

How Fast Can A Truck Be Moving And Still Be Read?

Gate approaches are the favourable case because vehicles are decelerating toward a barrier. The limiting factor is shutter speed rather than the analytic, which is why minimum shutter is set manually per position. Send your approach geometry and expected approach speed with a design review and the position is assessed against them directly.

Can We Use Our Existing Gate CCTV?

Sometimes, and distance decides it. An existing 2 MP overview camera covering the whole gate apron sits well beyond the 5.1 m plate limit and will keep producing perfectly watchable video that cannot be read. Overview cameras generally stay where they are and a dedicated plate camera is added on the read line.

Does The Camera Need To See The Front Plate Or The Rear?

Whichever your enforcement regime makes reliable, mounted so that plate faces the camera within 30 degrees of tilt. Where trucks tow trailers with differing plates, the position is chosen for the unit that carries the plate you intend to log.

What Happens To The Video?

Processing happens on the appliance at the gate. What crosses the network is analytic metadata, meaning plate strings, timestamps, vehicle class and optionally a small cropped image. Cameras sit on an isolated VLAN with the appliance as the only bridging device.

What If A Position Fails?

The review names the specific remediation and prices it, whether that is a longer lens, a repositioned mount, an added infrared illuminator or a second camera. You choose what to remediate. Positions left unremediated are excluded from the accuracy commitment rather than quietly included.
